Oak Parquetry Flooring: Patterns, Sizes and Carton Coverage
Compare solid and engineered oak parquetry flooring, herringbone and chevron patterns, board sizes and carton quantities. Plan samples and a Melbourne trade supply enquiry.

Oak parquetry flooring uses timber boards arranged into a geometric pattern. Herringbone and chevron are two familiar examples, but parquetry can also include other repeating layouts. The WoodSolutions glossary describes the term in relation to the arrangement of timber pieces.
A pattern name tells you how a floor looks. To choose the boards, you also need to compare their construction, size and finish. Those details can differ even when two floors share the same pattern.
Start with the pattern
Herringbone uses rectangular boards whose ends meet the sides of neighbouring boards. The result is a staggered zigzag. Our herringbone flooring collection includes both engineered oak and raw solid oak options.
Chevron uses boards with angled ends that meet in a continuous V. Our current chevron flooring range is raw solid oak, with two board sizes.
If those are the two layouts on your shortlist, the Herringbone vs Chevron guide shows the differences in more detail. Here, the next step is to work out which actual board specification fits your project.
Parquetry can be solid or engineered timber
Parquetry is a description of the layout, rather than a separate timber species or a single board construction. The Australasian Timber Flooring Association describes engineered flooring in both plank and parquetry formats.
Our engineered herringbone has a European oak surface over a multi-layer eucalyptus hardwood core. The board is 15 mm thick overall, including a 4 mm oak wear layer. It is supplied in five matte OAK / EDITIONS finishes.
Our solid oak herringbone and chevron are 18 mm thick and supplied raw and unstained. The final colour and coating are part of the site finishing plan. Agree that plan with the installer or finishing contractor before ordering.

Compare the current board sizes
| Pattern and construction | Board size | Supplied finish |
|---|---|---|
| Engineered oak herringbone | 900 × 150 × 15/4 mm | Five matte finishes |
| Solid oak herringbone | 610 × 125 × 18 mm | Raw / unstained |
| Solid oak herringbone | 450 × 90 × 18 mm | Raw / unstained |
| Solid oak chevron | 590 × 125 × 18 mm | Raw / unstained |
| Solid oak chevron | 850 × 95 × 18 mm | Raw / unstained |
The 15/4 mm notation means 15 mm overall thickness with a 4 mm oak surface; it does not mean a 19 mm board. These are the formats in our current catalogue. Confirm the exact product specification and availability when you enquire.
Compare a board sample with the room plan. A single sample helps with grain and colour, while a layout plan makes the pattern scale, direction and edges easier to assess. Our herringbone size guide and chevron size guide cover the proportions in more detail.
Match the finish to the rest of the room
For engineered herringbone, compare Burnished Java, Latte Tan, Natural Oak, Satin Greige and Washed Sand beside the wall colours, cabinetry and other floor surfaces. Timber variation and the light in the room will affect what you see. Use physical samples to support the decision.
For raw solid oak, ask the finishing contractor to show the proposed colour and coating on the timber. Include the finishing work and its timing in the project scope.
Turn a floor area into a carton quantity
Compare carton coverage after choosing the actual board. The same room area can require a different number of cartons for different formats. Start with the order area agreed with your installer, including the allowance for cuts, then divide by the product's coverage per carton and round up to a whole carton.
| Current format | Boards per carton | Coverage per carton | Whole cartons for 20 m² | Area purchased |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engineered straight plank | 6 Boards (25% Nested) | 2.166 m² | 10 | 21.66 m² |
| Engineered herringbone | 14 pcs | 1.89 m² | 11 | 20.79 m² |
| Solid herringbone, 610 | 20 pcs | 1.525 m² | 14 | 21.35 m² |
| Solid herringbone, 450 | 28 pcs | 1.134 m² | 18 | 20.412 m² |
| Solid chevron, 590 | 20 pcs | 1.475 m² | 14 | 20.65 m² |
| Solid chevron, 850 | 18 pcs | 1.37 m² | 15 | 20.55 m² |
This table reads the current published product specifications. The engineered rows use Natural Oak as the reference finish; follow the product link and confirm your selected finish before ordering. The 20 m² example excludes any cutting allowance and does not establish the final quantity for a particular room.
The last column is the whole-carton area being purchased. Compare that quantity with your quote, and discuss the room layout, borders, cuts and any spare boards with your installer. Our timber flooring cost and quote guide explains how to compare the supply, installation and finishing scope.
What to include in a supply enquiry
Send your preferred pattern, construction, approximate floor area and project location. Include any target timing and tell us whether you need physical samples, product specifications or trade pricing.
Give the same room plan to the installer. Ask them to confirm subfloor preparation, floor heights, fixing method and the allowance for cuts. Requirements depend on the exact boards and site conditions; a parquetry pattern alone does not establish suitability.
Bestwork is based in Melbourne’s east. Delivery can be arranged across Victoria, NSW and the ACT, and to Adelaide, SA. Flooring retailers and wholesalers can send a trade enquiry to discuss the range and project requirements.
Common questions
Is parquetry the same as herringbone?
Herringbone is one parquetry layout. Chevron and other geometric timber arrangements also fall within the broader parquetry description.
Do you supply engineered chevron?
Our current chevron range is solid oak. Engineered oak is available in herringbone and straight planks. Compare the construction listed on each product page.
Can you quote for supply by floor area?
Include the approximate area and chosen format in your enquiry. Confirm the order quantity and cutting allowance with your installer before placing the order.
