Raw solid oak chevron flooring in 850 × 95 mm boards in a living room
Room inspiration · Solid oak chevron 850 × 95 mm

Chevron flooring is defined by its angled board ends, but the size of the board decides how the pattern feels in a room. Bestwork supplies raw, unstained 18 mm solid oak chevron in two formats: 590 × 125 mm and 850 × 95 mm. This guide compares them side by side so you can choose the right one before ordering samples.

Reading chevron board dimensions

The listed dimensions are length × width × thickness. Chevron 590 is 590 mm long, 125 mm wide and 18 mm thick; Chevron 850 is 850 mm long, 95 mm wide and 18 mm thick.

The 850 mm board is 260 mm longer but 30 mm narrower. It is not simply a larger version of the 590 mm board in every direction. Compare both length and width when assessing the shape of the pattern.

Board dimensions alone do not describe the width of a complete V or the pattern repeat across the room. Confirm the cut angle and dimension reference on the selected product’s specification, then ask your installer for a scaled layout. See the Chevron 590 specification and Chevron 850 specification.

How the two sizes look

The 590 mm board is shorter and wider. Each V is broader, so the pattern reads as bold and substantial, with plenty of grain visible in every board.

The 850 mm board is longer and narrower. The rows of V shapes stretch out, giving finer lines and a more elongated rhythm. On our Chevron 850 page you can see how the slender boards carry a continuous line through a living space.

Neither size is better in every room. Lay out a few boards from each format where the floor will go, and look along the main line of sight from the doorway. The direction of the V matters as much as the board size.

Which size should you compare in a hallway?

Mark the proposed centre line and view the layout from the entrance. Check how the V shapes meet doorways, adjoining rooms and perimeter cuts. A long, narrow board and a shorter, wider board can each suit a hallway; the floor plan and laying direction decide the result.

Use several sample boards or a scaled layout rather than choosing from one board or a room photograph alone. If you prefer rectangular boards with a staggered meeting point, compare the 450, 610 and 900 mm herringbone sizes as a separate pattern option.

Cartons by floor area

Carton numbers below are floor area divided by carton coverage, rounded up. They do not include a cutting allowance, so confirm final quantities with your installer.

Calculating an order with a cutting allowance

Use the order area your installer has confirmed, including their allowance for cuts and any spare material. Divide by the published coverage of the selected carton and round up. Use the listed carton coverage rather than estimating coverage from nominal board dimensions alone.

If the confirmed order area is 22 m², Chevron 590 needs 22 ÷ 1.475 = 14.92, rounded up to 15 cartons (22.125 m²). Chevron 850 needs 22 ÷ 1.37 = 16.06, rounded up to 17 cartons (23.29 m²). This is a calculation example, not a cutting-allowance recommendation.

The table above excludes cutting allowance. Confirm coverage for the current product and batch before finalising an order. For a complete supply and installation comparison, use our flooring cost and quote checklist.

Profile and installation

Both chevron formats are supplied without tongue and groove. Ask us to confirm the profile, cut angle and availability for the format you choose, and follow your installer’s advice for the subfloor and laying method.

Finishing raw oak

Both boards are supplied raw and unstained. That means the final colour and coating are chosen for the project, whether you want a pale natural look or a deeper tone. See how the two patterns differ in our guide to herringbone vs chevron.

For a raw oak sample, agree on the proposed coating and compare the finished sample in your room’s light. Our unfinished oak flooring guide explains why the final coating should be part of the selection and quotation.

What to include in a chevron enquiry

  • The format: 590 × 125 × 18 mm or 850 × 95 × 18 mm.

  • Whether you need physical samples, the current specification or a supply quote.
  • Questions to confirm with the supplier and installer: cut angle, board profile, left/right board requirements, layout, subfloor preparation and the finishing plan.
